A Brief History of Quizzing
Yesterday I had been to Kozhikode for a quiz by Malayala Manorama. And as has been the story for some time now , we were placed second behind nit calicut team .Most probably this was the last quiz for us as students.
I used to win prizes in school level . Once I joined pre degree I got exposed to college quizes. Many say it as the golden period of Kerala quizzing . I never stood a chance to qualify in any contest at that time. The competition was too tough. It was the same story when i joined degree. Though I believe I was a better quizzer that time I never had a nice partner.
Then came my days in GEC Thrissur. I have to thank Gheverghese for his support and Vaidyanathan who was ready to have long quizzing sessions in his room for making me interested in quizzing again. These sessions were very interesting .When I joined GEC I never qualified even for the intra quizes. Slowly I picked the pace and went on to win some inter quizes also. I had a long number of partners during this journey - 15!. My first team mate was my room mate Sony. Funny part is that he doesnt remember that!
Me and Maxin were team for some time . Then that nut started to lose interest in Quizzing and got interested in projects and Linux. Now he is placed in HCL and im still job hunting. It took me a great long time to find a partner in Arun Ashok. Fortunately he was also out of partner when his team mate got involved in CAT.Our team was one of the most succesful from our college.Highlights of my quizzing life includes University Challenge 2003.
Thinking of quiz masters the first person that comes to my mind is Dr Kishore Chandran. Sadly he has gone to Banglore. Many in my college said that it is a lose for GEC since he used to do most quizzes in our college. He used to do truly class quizzes with wonderful qns from sports. He was also very encouraging and inspiring. Some of his connection Visuals were real fundas.Promoth George has wonderful trivias and biz qns.He is the most energetic QM I've seen. I could only attend one quiz of Devdas Krishnan. It was realy enjoyable.
My 15 partners -Sony Mathew, Sarath Kumar, Maxin John, Smitha Sebastain, Sachin Nair, George Stephen, Ghevarghese Daniel, A K Vaidyanathan, Paul Mathew, Mahesh Nair, Rajasekhar, Harikrishnan, Chandu Lenin, Rahul Girish and Arun Ashok.
We had a great time together. i used to compete against most of these and we GECians always enjoyed the healthy competition.
Then we had those from other institutes; the list led by the NIT Calicut members Manjith, Praveen , Abid(only last day i knew that he has compiled a quiz book and will soon release the next one),Vipin and Atul, The one man army from medical college Sarin , the one man army who calls himself "Ayur Kid"-Vijaynath.(we used to thank god that Sarin and Vijay didnt end up in same institute) the maharajas-Lloyd, Mrinal and Anand.we had nice fights on stage.though I couldnt face him on stage Sajan was by far the best that I have seen.
now i has to try my luck in some open events

Rajesh,
You know why I stopped quizzing... ?
The more I went to quizzes , the more I knew about my 'vast knowledge'. I knew it is pathetic for me to participate in quizzing without prepare for it (I hate to prepare even for examinations!!)
I never prepared even for the project competitions... everything will be ready only in the eve of the evaluation day. Miracles can happen that's why I won the prices in the competitions... and I was with you .. that's why 'we' won some quizzes. You were the winning factor in our team....
But how dare u call me a nut......????? I think I never reached that glorous position... at least untill now...

I strongly believe that .....
Boz,after years you can expect some questions being asked on you perhaps from this blog itself.
Elephants have small eyes which move rapidly in constant fear.It is unaware of its size.Similarly, you don't recognize your towering personality & requires a "Jambavan-handsome,powerful yet so young" like me to make you aware of the Hanuman in you.How ironical,I presume....
I ascertain that you are one of the legendary quizzers of our era.Never doubt that at all, at any stage.....4 the time being Alvida

Am ur 7th sense team mate.
Followed the link on ur mail and ended up here.Didnt know u were in the Kerala circuit as well...ur blog triggered of old memories. Thot i'll put a brief history of my quizzing days as well...
I ws ther 1995-1999 time; We were the Dept Of Ship Tech, CUSAT team of Naveen n Bharadwaj; a time when Devdas ruled and others like Gigi/Lloyd (Alberts); Sachin/David(Maharajas); Kiran/Gerald (TVM engg)etc were our competition just to name some. Tcr engg college had Anoop.Mebbe the golden era
Later on real good quizzers came from Nirmala - Sooraj now in IIM K ..hmm Sajan (if its the same person am thinkin of) ws from some Thodupuzha college. We were in several stage battles with all of them..won some lost some !! AJ, Kishore, Soman, mr Q ..were the quizmasters of the era...Those were surely the best quizzing days of my life. Travelled all around Kerala from Kasargod to Kattapana !!
Screwed up engg classes and
paid the price; scraped thru engg with 60% and did MBA later.
Came runnersup in National Inter Untiversity Quiz along with Devdas N Bharatwaj representing CUSAT
...SIGHHH
Neway almost ruled Mumbai Biz Quizzing for 2 years from KJSomaiya with the Kerala quizzing experience..Till others caught on
But nowadays in B'lore; its impossible to even get on stage among the heavy weights :-((
Got lucky wth CNBC Challenge in between tho'
btw I've a blog too but is a general blog...more into humor. There's a quiz story too
Do take a look whn u hav time
Hi Naveen,
nice to know that we are mallus of da vincis.i read one post from your blog- your corporate quiz in delhi.made interesting reading.when i came to quizzing scene actively Lloyd was in maharajas. i might have seen you when i did my pre degree.those days i would get two from prelims.i had been to many quizzes in ekm that time and one in kanjirapally st dominic college.where you there? i remember sachin from maharajas.i also remeber devdas the quizzer .he was also a good qm. i think sajan from thodupuzha college is the same sajan i wrote. when i saw him last he was in uty college, tvm.
> Sachin/David(Maharajas)
Is this Sachin Narayanan, who came from Kadayiruppu (near Kolenchery ) ?
i have no idea.naveen might be more familiar
hi dude... ur great
ya kerala quizzing is really good nowadays but i wud still say the emphasis has not changed from by heart level stuff where as if you go to quizzes in chennai all the questions are based on old english movies and music bands etc o which few if at all any are asked in quizzes
Hi All,
Nice to see all these reminiscnses of the Kerala quizzing scene.I represented Calicut Medical College at some of these quizzes during 1993-2000...it was a great time, with lot of good quizzers like Devadas, Anoop(trichur)..Being from the north of kerala and not able to get much leave from medical collefe, I have missed many quizzes in south Kerala..
Naveen(giles), I am sure we have met.were you with devadas when we beat cusat in the National Interuniversity Finals?
I am now in uk and out of all quizzing....
Anjay !!!
Hello my fellow Aluva-ite ;definitley remmber u ; missed u earlier as we havent met in quizzes too much
Yeah tht was me who was with Devadas at Nat'l Inter Uty
You and Rajmohan(calicut uty)beat us (CUSAT) in a nailbiting final where we lost by one point :-(( We had real bad luck that day !!Devadas couldnt name 10 Hindi Music directors and Bharatwaj's one answer was disallowed aftr protest from someone in the audience. 3 questions were frm the day's Hindu paper and we had instead bought Indian Express on the morning b4 gettin on the train to Calicut!!!:-(((
Nice remembering it all aftr so long!!do drop me a mail at navingiles@yahoo.com
Rajesh , thanx to ur blog; meeting old pals!
Cheers
Naveen
Am treally honoured....;-)
