I was startled to see the statement made by the Indian captain that he was asked to step down befor the first test match against Zimbabwe. If Greg Chappell had to ask him to step down it could have been after the series. Also Sourav could have waited for the match to end before going out with the issue.
The 100 that he made against one of the weakest bowling attacks was not at all convincing. Of course there was pressure on him to perform and he needed to spend sometime in the middle. I think he was batting for so long after a long time.
I still am a fan of Sourav and would love to see him bounce back. These are the days when lots of “Ganguly jokes” are getting popular. Like putting the Maggie noodles in the pan when he goes to bat and take out when he is out i.e. after two minutes; or comparing his bat to a walking stick.
He doesn’t deserve to be the subject of such jokes. One should not forget his contributions to the team and his heroics.
Just a reminder for the cricket fan who forgets things easily
When he made his ODI debut in the year 1992 against WI in the tri series in Aus no one expected that he would play for the country again . I had watched that match and he cut a sorry figure.He was out for 3 . He played some balls and seemed to be afraid to run . I think his partner was Sachin. Seeing his performance that day it was surprising to see him included for the England tour in 96. Many former cricketers had blamed the selection committee for this. But Sourav proved them all wrong. Hitting 100’s in his first two test matches he cemented his place in the team.
How can one forget the way he thrashed balls to the offside boundary? There was no moment as beautiful in cricket as the way he stepped out to hit those gigantic sixes. Not even Sidhu’s hits match the aesthetic beauty of the Souravs. The way he dispatched Murali in WC 99 was awesome. How can people forget the way he played Shaun Pollock during the ODI’s in SA? Shaun has been one of world crickets best bowlers with a very good economy rate. Sourav fearlessly stepped out for hitting sixes against him. And how could one forget the series defining 144 at Brisbane or promoting himself ahead of a struggling Sachin to protect his wicket or the 5 MOM he won in succession which is still a record or the century against Pakistan when India successfully chased a record score?
He could guide the team well at the time of match fixing crisis. There was a “Team India” under his leadership. We were able to match all the tricks that Steve Waughs team had to offer . We were able to give them a taste of their own tactics. We started to win test matches in WI, England and Australia. We reached the finals of WC.
There was an interesting statistic on his performance against non test playing countries and test playing countries. His three centuries in the tournament had come against week opposition.
It was true and he wasn’t that good against other teams , but why blame him if he performs against these teams. We were 3 down for 24 against Kenya in the super six match with Sachin and Sehwag out very single digit scores. In the Semi finals only he and Sachin contributed with the bat. What would have happened if he failed in these matches too?His other 100 came against Namibia
Sourav is an all time great in ODI. He has scored more than 10,000 runs and is second behind Sachin in the number of centuries scored. The opening duo of Sachin and Sourav had been one of the best best in the world.
He may be asked to resign from the post and may not find a place in the team after the series is over. He would like to test himself for the match at Harare . It would be in the best interest of the team and the country if he can regain some form. Else Sourav , please don’t make yourself a subject of new jokes. Resign as an honorable man. The record books and statistics would hail you for ever.

Whoa.. Its been a long time since I saw a Saurav fan other than myself. Great going dude we are on the same Boat.
Yea, I too feel that the Saurav shouldn’t be asked to step down, and I sure believe that if he is in the eleven then there is no man better than him to lead the side. His record as the captain justifies that. But there is another side to this story as well.. there is no denying the fact that he has struggled in the ODIs and the test arena for the last one and a half years. I just think what he needs most is reassurance, just select him as the captain for the next 6 months instead of a tournament to tournament basis and tell him that no matter what you will be in the side for the next six months, if you give him that reassurance you wont see him making a 100 out of 256 balls. Give him time to find that long lost fluency of his shots, a man of his caliber deserves as much.
When i posted the blog i had some respect left for him. not a trace reamains after reading todays papers. If he has the best interests of the team , his retirement would be the only option left for him to make.

so you are also a sourav fan. wonderful i am the lone ranger here by supporting sourav. but similarly i lost respect forhim when he went public with the details of the dressing room. hope he mmakes up soon. and when did you become a tajikistanian?

ganguly's return to form is just a faint hope. atleast in test level. i had written this piece when the controversy first broke out. after the day by day news its turning out to be a dirty affair.really cant figure out who is better greg or ganguly.
his place in test squad is not at all benificial for india if he plays in this form.having said that , if players like venugopala rao can still find a place in the one day team(of course at sachins absence) why cant ganguly be in the one day team?
the australian way of selection is totally unique in this world. they still can afford to lose damien martyn.but they couldnt do it when mark taylors personal form was at an all time low.the way he bounced back is history which i dont feel sourav can do. but they have done it wisely. they did it for an entertainement series. i hope he will be back.
before scoring a century in the last ashes test hayden had broken the aussie record of longest number of innings without a score above 70 by a regular batsman. he just ensured his place by that knock.
